Observance of martial customs, courtesies, and academy rules develops personal discipline, heightens awareness, contributes to a better learning environment, and promotes safety.
Bowing
•Greet the instructors and fellow students by bowing or giving handshakes.
•Bow before stepping on the mat acknowledging your readiness to train and when leaving the mat to thank your partners for their help.
•The instructors bow to each other and greet all students by personally shaking their hands at the end of class.
•Greet—shake hands--practice partners before and after each block of training to thank them for assisting you.
Formation
•Line up with senior student at right front and junior student at left rear. If you lack a belt or uniform or are a guest of the school, then stand at the end of the line.
•The instructors will take a position in the front center of the class and give the beginning and ending class signals.
•When awaiting the start of your class, sits on the edge of the mat your feet crossed.
Safety and Cleanliness
•Tap often and tap early—you will fight another day.
•Keep your Jiu-Jitsu uniform clean and odors free.
•Report any skin problem to the instructors.
•Keep fingernails and toenails clipped and clean.
•Secure long hair.
•No watches or jewelry.
•Remove shoes before stepping onto the mat. Store your shoes neatly under the visitor bench.
•No horseplay or unsupervised sparring.
•All school members help keep the school clean.
•Obey the instructors at all times.
•Report injuries immediately to the instructors.
•Use training equipment as directed by the instructors. Return it to place of storage when you finish with it.
•Safety equipment (mouthpiece, cup, chest protector) will be worn during randori/free sparring unless otherwise authorized by the instructors.
Courtesy
•Be on time for class. If late, wait for the instructors signal before joining the class.
•When you arrive, change into your uniform and sit cross-legged at the edge of the mat.
•Once class has begun, excuse yourself to one instructor prior to departing the mat area.
•Tobacco, alcoholic beverages, firearms, chewing gum, and food are prohibited in the school.
•Face toward a wall when adjusting your uniform.
Discipline
•Control yourself--language, actions, gestures, and expressions.
•Sit properly with legs crossed without leaning on walls.
•Move with purpose.
Responsibility
•Everything you learn should be used to make you a better person.
•Cooperate with your partners during drills and tap early to avoid injury.
•Always assist less experienced students.
•Follow the school rules and etiquette.
